White Feather’s Mission of Sustainability
Located on 8.5 pristine acres bordering national forest, White Feather seeks to be a local leader in sustainable living. The natural resources that sustain this breathtaking environment are precious and limited. In addition to providing the perfect setting for your retreat or workshop, White Feather hopes that you will take advantage of the many on-site opportunities to reduce your consumption of resources and to learn about new opportunities to support a more sustainable lifestyle.
Electricity
White Feather has a long-term plan for complete conversion to solar energy. We are fortunate to be blessed with ample sun to fully power our operations. We are realizing this full conversion building by building over the next few years. Currently, the yurt is fully powered by solar. You can help support sustainable consumption of electricity by turning out lights when not in use, leaving blow dryers and other high-use personal electronics at home, and charging your cell phones and personal computers before you arrive. If possible, take this opportunity to unplug completely and enjoy the revitalizing energy of nature! You can also help fund our full conversion to solar by donating here:________
WaterÂ
Perhaps the most precious resource in California today is water. White Feather supports water conservation in the main house through low-flow appliances and filters on taps. Our aquaponic garden uses recycled grey-water from the main house to grow vegetables, herbs, and fruit for the enjoyment of our guests. Composting toilets near the yurt and guest quarters also conserve water and support the health of the trees on the property. You can further support responsible water use by limiting showers to five minutes, turing off taps while brushing your teeth or washing your face, and using unconsumed liquids such as coffee and tea to water local plants. You can further reduce water usage by bringing your own refillable water bottle to reduce repeated washing of cups and mugs.
Trash
White Feather seeks to drastically reduce the amount of trash amassed on the property. There is no local trash collection service on the mountain. All food scraps and biodegradable matter is composted to support the health of the plants and garden. We ask you to be mindful of the use of plastic and other non-biodegradable matter on the mountain. Please bring your own refillable water bottle, use biodegradable or ceramic dishes, and avoid plastic cutlery, plastic grocery bags, and plastic wrap.
Sustainable BuildingÂ
White Feather has plans to complete several new spaces using sustainable building methods and materials. These projects include an eco-dome, an outdoor bath and shower house, an outdoor kitchen, and additional guest housing. If you would like to participate in a sustainable building workshop at White Feather, where you will help create these beautiful new spaces while learning from experts in sustainable building, sign up here:___________.
